We walk pointing to the Refuge, steady, faithful, and anchored in Christ.

Introduction: A Word Offered in Gratitude and Love

I want to begin by expressing sincere gratitude for the care, sobriety, and compassion reflected in Compassion with a Spine written by . In a time when grief is often rushed, minimized, or spiritually bypassed, this article rightly calls God’s people to slow down, listen well, and treat sorrow as sacred ground. That instinct is deeply biblical. Scripture repeatedly warns against careless speech in suffering and commends those who draw near with humility and restraint (Job 2:13; Prov 25:11; Rom 12:15).

What follows is not written as a rebuttal, but as a loving clarification from within a shared commitment to care for the grieving faithfully. My aim is not to dismantle what is good here, but to gently strengthen it by anchoring it more explicitly in the sufficiency of Scripture and the centrality of the heart before God.

As a biblical counselor, I am convinced that compassion is most faithful and most protective when it is biblically informed rather than merely ethically framed or experientially shaped. Scripture does not oppose presence, patience, or boundaries; it deepens them, directs them, and roots them in the character and purposes of God. Because grief exposes the heart and intensifies questions of meaning, hope, and trust, the ground beneath our care must be nothing less than God’s revealed Word.

With that posture, I offer the following reflections not as correction from a distance, but as counsel offered alongside, seeking to honor the tenderness of grief while keeping Christ, His truth, and His redemptive purposes clearly in view.

A Biblical Counselor’s Loving Response to Compassion with a Spine

I am grateful for the seriousness with which this article approaches grief and for its resistance to shallow or triumphal responses to suffering. The emphasis on patience, restraint, and reverence reflects a needed corrective within many Christian spaces where sorrow is often managed rather than honored.

That said, as a biblical counselor, I want to offer a gentle clarification, not as a rebuke, but as a re-centering of our foundation. My concern is not what this article affirms, but what it leaves unstated and how certain language may unintentionally shift the ground of care away from the sufficiency of Scripture and the heart before God.

Grief does not merely require careful presence; it calls for careful theology. Because grief exposes what we love, trust, and hope in most deeply, the way we walk with the grieving inevitably shapes their worship, whether we intend it or not. For that reason, biblical care must remain explicitly anchored in God’s revealed truth, even when words are few and progress feels slow.

Grief Is Tender Ground, but Never Neutral Ground

It is right to say that grief is not a problem to be solved and that lament must be honored. Scripture gives us inspired language for sorrow, confusion, and unanswered questions (Pss 13; 42; 88). Yet Scripture also teaches that grief is never spiritually neutral. It is a place where the heart is exposed and where worship is being shaped, even in tears.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jer 17:9)

This does not mean that grief should be confronted harshly or corrected prematurely. But it does mean that grief is always a heart-engaging experience, not merely an emotional or relational one. Biblical grief companionship does more than preserve safety; it gently helps the sufferer bring their sorrow toward God, not merely be held within a protected space.

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us” (Ps 62:8)

Presence is essential. Silence is often wise. But biblical presence always has a Godward direction, even when words are few.

Ethics Are Important, but the Heart Is Primary

I appreciate the article’s concern for boundaries, humility, and ethical clarity. Scripture affirms that wisdom includes knowing one’s limits and avoiding harm (Prov 11:14; 22:3). However, biblical counseling begins one step deeper than professional ethics. It begins with the heart before God.

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Prov 4:23)

Ethics alone cannot shepherd the heart of the grieving or the helper. A person can remain ethically compliant while still subtly shifting hope toward the relationship, the process, or the companion. Biblical care continually asks: Where is this person placing their trust? Where is mine?

Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.”
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.” (Jer 17:5, 7)

Boundaries are good, but they are not the deepest safeguard. The deepest safeguard is keeping Christ clearly in view as the true refuge, healer, and shepherd of the soul.

Scripture Is More Than Gentle; It Is Living and Active

The article rightly warns against using Scripture to silence grief or rush hope. That concern is wise and necessary. Scripture should never be used as a hammer. Yet Scripture does more than comfort; it interprets reality and calls the heart into truth over time.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Heb 4:12)

Jesus wept with Mary and Martha, but He did not leave them in undefined sorrow. He gently drew them toward belief, hope, and resurrection life (John 11:25–27). Biblical counseling follows this same arc: presence, lament, and then patient reorientation of hope.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” (Ps 42:5)

Hope is not forced, but neither is it optional. It is patiently cultivated through truth.

A Word on “Grief-Informed Practice”

This phrase deserves careful attention. While the intent is clearly compassionate, the language subtly locates authority in experience-informed frameworks rather than in the Word of God.

Biblical counseling affirms that all true wisdom for life, suffering, and grief flows from God’s revealed truth.

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Pet 1:3)

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16–17)

This does not deny learning from experience. Nor does it deny the real physiological, relational, and emotional effects of loss. Scripture itself invites reflection on suffering. But experience must always be interpreted by Scripture, not alongside it as an informing authority.

From a biblical counseling perspective, the aim is not to practice from a grief-informed model, but from a Scripture-saturated, Christ-centered understanding of grief in which God defines healing, hope, and faithfulness.

Compassion With a Spine, Anchored in Christ

True compassion does have a spine. That spine is not primarily ethical structure or professional restraint. It is confidence in the living God, who draws near to the brokenhearted and who uses sorrow to deepen faith, not replace it.

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Ps 34:18)

“After you have suffered a little while, [He] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” (1 Pet 5:10)

Biblical grief companionship is not about managing grief safely, but about walking with someone as they slowly and painfully learn to entrust their broken heart to the faithful hands of God.

That walk must be gentle. It must be patient. And it must always, lovingly, lead upward.

A Final Word of Hope

As we close, my prayer is that our confidence in caring for the grieving would rest not in our skill, presence, or restraint, but in the living God who alone shepherds wounded hearts. Scripture reminds us that we are never the refuge, but witnesses to the Refuge, for “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps 46:1).

As we walk with those in sorrow, may we do so with humility, trusting that the Lord draws near to the brokenhearted (Ps 34:18), works patiently through weakness (2 Cor 12:9), and uses even grief to conform His people to the image of His Son (Rom 8:29).

May our care always direct weary hearts upward, helping them learn, slowly and honestly, to pour out their pain before God and to find hope not in us, but in Him who “comforts us in all our affliction” so that His comfort might abound through Christ (2 Cor 1:3–5).

Thanks for reading data-component-name="MentionToDOM"> makes a bold claim: that the teachings of Jesus obligate Christians to endorse a particular set of modern progressive governmental programs. While the article attempts to ground these positions in Scripture, it consistently confuses the commands given to God’s people with those given to civil authorities. A loving but truthful response is needed—one that honors Christ, respects Scripture, and treats the hurting with compassion without distorting the biblical message.

I should also say upfront that I normally do not respond to posts I disagree with; people are free to share what they wish. The only reason I am writing now is because this particular article was sent directly to me in response to a brief note I posted that simply said, “In every season, God is better to us than we deserve. His mercy meets us daily with fresh evidence of His love.” Since the article was shared with me personally, I want to answer with clarity, charity, and biblical conviction.

1. Confusing Personal Commands With Government Responsibilities

The most foundational theological issue with the article is its tendency to take biblical instructions addressed to believers and apply them directly to secular civil government. Jesus calls His people to care for the poor, feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and show sacrificial love (Matt 25:35; Luke 10:25–37; James 1:27). But these commands are given to the church and to individual disciples—not to Rome, not to Caesar, and not to any earthly government. Romans 13:1–7 teaches that the government’s primary God-given responsibility is to maintain order, execute justice, and restrain evil. That is entirely different from the church’s mission, which is to proclaim the gospel and demonstrate Christlike love. When the article takes the beautiful responsibilities God assigns to His people and shifts them onto the modern state, it distorts both Scripture and the nature of Christ’s kingdom. This is not harshness toward the poor; it is simply recognizing the biblical distinction between the church’s calling and the government’s calling.

2. Misusing the Ministry of Jesus as Political Blueprint

The article repeatedly uses episodes from Jesus’ life—His healings, His feeding of the multitudes, His compassion for the marginalized—as evidence that He would endorse expansive government welfare programs. But Jesus’ miracles were acts of divine compassion and signs of His messianic identity (John 20:30–31), not political models. Jesus healed freely (Mark 1:34), fed thousands supernaturally (Mark 6:30–44), and relieved suffering out of mercy. Yet He never instructed Rome to build hospitals or fund social programs. He never advocated for governmental redistribution. His ministry was not aimed at reforming imperial policy but at calling sinners to repentance and announcing the arrival of the kingdom of God (Mark 1:14–15). To turn His miracles into political templates is to misunderstand their purpose. Jesus Himself told Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). His mission transcends and outstrips every modern political system—not because He is indifferent to suffering, but because His solutions begin with transformed hearts, not state legislation.

3. Misreading Acts 2–4 as Government Redistribution

Acts 2–4 is an extraordinary picture of Spirit-filled generosity. Believers shared voluntarily, joyfully, and sacrificially so that “there was not a needy person among them” (Acts 4:34). But this generosity was not compulsory, not state-driven, and not coerced. Peter makes this unmistakably clear when he confronts Ananias: “While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own?” (Acts 5:4). The early church practiced voluntary mutual care—not forced redistribution. Their example is a model for Christian charity and hospitality, not a blueprint for federal taxation policy. Turning these passages into modern political programs collapses the distinction between the church’s joyful obedience and the government’s legitimate, but limited, role.

4. Ignoring Scripture’s Teaching on Responsibility and Work

A theologically sound approach to poverty must include the full biblical witness. The article highlights passages about care for the poor but overlooks those that emphasize personal responsibility, diligence, and stewardship. Paul writes plainly, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (2 Thess 3:10). Scripture urges believers to “aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands” (1 Thess 4:11). Proverbs repeatedly connects laziness with poverty (Prov 10:4; 13:4). Of course, these passages do not justify hardness of heart; they simply present a balanced view of human responsibility in a fallen world. Compassion and responsibility are not enemies—Scripture holds them together. By selectively citing texts that fit a particular narrative while ignoring others, the article presents an incomplete and imbalanced theology.

5. Applying Old Covenant Civil Laws to Modern Nations

Many of the article’s arguments rely on Old Testament laws given to Israel—such as Sabbath-year debt release (Deut 15:1–11), wage regulations (Deut 24:14–15), or gleaning practices. But these civil laws were given to a covenant nation directly under God’s rule, functioning as a theocratic society with unique covenant responsibilities. Hebrews 8–10 explains that the Mosaic covenant has been fulfilled and superseded by Christ. Galatians 3 teaches that the law served a particular purpose in redemptive history. These Old Covenant civil systems do not apply to modern secular governments, just as temple sacrifices or priestly garments do not apply. Using Israel’s theocratic laws to argue for U.S. federal policy is a misunderstanding of biblical covenants. A loving reading of Scripture honors every text in its redemptive-historical context.

6. Promoting Liberation Theology Rather than the Biblical Gospel

The article repeatedly casts Jesus primarily as a political liberator concerned with class struggle and systemic inequalities. This line of interpretation reflects liberation theology and the social gospel—movements that contain elements of truth but ultimately redefine salvation in political rather than spiritual terms. Scripture presents Jesus as the Savior who “came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He offers forgiveness of sins (Mark 2:5), reconciliation with God (2 Cor 5:18–21), and the gift of new birth (John 3:3). He changes societies by changing hearts. While the gospel produces compassion, justice, and mercy, it does not reduce Jesus to a political reformer. The greatest need of humanity is not wealth equality but spiritual reconciliation with a holy God. When social theory becomes the lens for interpreting Jesus, the gospel of grace is inevitably pushed aside.

7. The Bible’s Balanced Teaching on Government, Church, and Compassion

A biblical worldview affirms that God cares deeply for the poor, the sick, the immigrant, and the marginalized. The prophets thunder against oppression. Jesus moved with compassion toward the hurting. The early church cared sacrificially for the needy. These truths are not in dispute. But Scripture also maintains clear distinctions between the roles of government, church, and individual believers. Government is given the responsibility to maintain order and uphold justice (Rom 13:1–4; 1 Pet 2:13–17). The church is called to proclaim the gospel, disciple believers, and care for the vulnerable (James 1:27; Gal 6:10; Acts 11:29–30). Believers are called to live generous, hardworking, compassionate, others-focused lives (Eph 4:28; Rom 12:13; 1 Tim 5:8). Compassion is essential. But compassion never requires that Christians support a specific slate of political policies, nor does Scripture assign such ministries to the state.

8. A Loving Summary of the Biblical Vision

The article’s desire to champion care for the poor is commendable, and Christians should wholeheartedly affirm that Jesus cares deeply for the vulnerable. But caring for the poor does not require endorsing the policy prescriptions the article promotes. The biblical vision is both higher and deeper: transformed hearts that lead to transformed lives. Jesus never tasked the government with administering charity or mandating generosity. Instead, He calls His church to embody His compassion and His people to live sacrificially in the power of the Spirit. When Scripture is read in context and with careful attention to covenant, kingdom, and church, it becomes clear that the gospel cannot be reduced to political ideology—whether progressive or conservative. Jesus is Lord of all, and His kingdom is not built through governmental systems but through redeemed people walking in love, truth, and grace. A biblical, Christ-centered approach to justice is never indifferent to suffering, but neither does it confuse political activism with gospel faithfulness. True justice flows from hearts transformed by the gospel and hands moved by Christlike compassion—not from equating His kingdom with any earthly program.

Closing Thought

At the end of the day, my aim in responding to this article is not to win an argument or score a point, but to shepherd hearts—including my own—toward a clearer, truer, more worshipful vision of Jesus Christ. Scripture calls us to noutheteō—to admonish, instruct, and counsel one another with the truth of God’s Word for the sake of genuine spiritual good. That word does not describe harsh correction but loving, truth-filled, gospel-shaped guidance offered with patience and humility. I write in that spirit. My desire is always that we would behold Christ as He truly is, not as any ideology—right, left, or otherwise—tries to remake Him. I long for the church to hold fast to the gospel in its purity, to guard sound doctrine, and to worship a Savior who transcends every political system and calls His people to a kingdom not of this world. If my response helps even one believer think more biblically, love Christ more deeply, and trust the sufficiency of His Word more confidently, then it has served its purpose. May we continue, together, to pursue a right view of the gospel and a right view of our Lord—because only the real Jesus can heal, save, and transform.

Thanks for reading Koinonia 59 !

This space exists to reflect on biblical counseling, theology, and life in Christ—with a heart for truth, grace, and growth in community.

If something here encouraged or challenged you, feel free to share it or join the conversation in the comments.

Share

📬 Not subscribed yet? You can do that below and stay connected as posts come.

Subscribe now

📖 “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…” — Galatians 6:14 (ESV)

The God Who Keeps Us: Responding with Grace to a Misunderstood Doctrine

How the Perseverance of the Saints Reflects God’s Faithfulness, Not Human License

Robert Cale

As a follower of Christ who embraces the historic doctrines of grace—what many call “Calvinism”—I appreciate the passion behind concerns for biblical fidelity and holiness. What Is Perseverance of the Saints?

Perseverance of the Saints teaches that all who are truly born again by the Spirit of God will continue in faith and repentance until the end—not by their own strength, but because God sustains them.

Jesus says it plainly:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27–28, ESV)

This isn’t a license to sin. In fact, those who belong to Jesus will bear fruit in keeping with repentance (Matthew 3:8; Galatians 5:22–24). When a professing believer walks away from Christ without repentance, the Bible interprets this not as someone losing salvation—but as someone who was never truly born again (1 John 2:19).

2. The Whole Picture: The Doctrines of Grace

Perseverance isn’t an isolated doctrine. It’s the final point in a beautiful chain of God’s saving work:

Total Depravity – We are dead in sin and unable to come to God on our own (Ephesians 2:1–3; Romans 3:10–12).

Unconditional Election – God chose us not because of anything in us, but because of His grace and sovereign love (Ephesians 1:4–5; Romans 9:16).

Limited Atonement – Christ’s death actually secured salvation for His people (John 10:11; Matthew 1:21).

Irresistible Grace – God’s grace in salvation is effectual—it brings the dead to life and draws the heart to Christ (John 6:37, 44; Ezekiel 36:26–27).

Perseverance of the Saints – Those whom God calls, He keeps (Romans 8:29–30).

This is not cold fatalism—it’s warm assurance. It doesn’t create pride; it humbles. As <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{"name":"J. A. And he is the definition of humble. The purpose of the points is—or should be—to show us Jesus. And when we see Jesus and his love, we learn about him and from him. True Calvinism is necessarily humble. When we see the five points as five pointers to Jesus, we see him more clearly and ourselves more humbly. The greater God’s grace in Jesus becomes to us, the more humble we become.”1

And:

“The most important five-letter word in Calvinism isn’t TULIP. It’s Jesus.”2

3. What About the Warnings?

John Wesley and others have raised powerful questions about biblical warnings. But let’s consider them in context.

The Bible is full of warnings—and those warnings are means that God uses to preserve His people. God doesn’t preserve us apart from perseverance. He preserves us through our perseverance in faith, obedience, and repentance.

Take Hebrews 6, one of the most frequently cited texts against eternal security. But note how it ends:

“Yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.” (Hebrews 6:9, ESV)

The writer uses a serious warning, then immediately affirms his confidence in their salvation. That pattern is repeated throughout the New Testament.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"

6. Humble Calvinism Is the Way Forward

I don’t write this as someone trying to win a theological debate. I write as someone who has tasted the mercy of God and wants others to see that God’s saving grace is more powerful than we dare imagine.

Humble Calvinism doesn’t boast. It doesn’t sneer. It marvels at grace, and it serves others with gentleness (2 Timothy 2:24–25).

To those who disagree with the doctrine of perseverance, I invite you to reconsider the God who finishes what He starts (Philippians 1:6). He is both holy and merciful. He doesn’t save us just to abandon us halfway through the journey. He saves us, keeps us, and brings us home.

Final Encouragement

To those weary of their sin and afraid they’ve “fallen too far”—if you’re still repenting, still clinging to Christ, still longing to be faithful—that is evidence of God at work in you.

And if you're unsure about this doctrine, I invite you not to judge it by poor examples or caricatures, but by Scripture itself and the character of the God who promises:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, ESV)

“The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom.” (2 Timothy 4:18, ESV)

That’s not cheap grace. That’s covenant love.

The Counselor’s Call: Koinonia 59’s Conclusion and Final Charge

It would be a tragedy of cosmic proportions to believe that God—who gave us the greatest gift in history, salvation through His Son—might give that gift only to later revoke it. The gospel is not a transaction dependent on our performance. It is a covenant sealed by the blood of Christ, anchored in the unchanging faithfulness of God.

’s post offers a detailed and passionate interpretation of Matthew 24:9 and other prophetic passages, highlighting a future Great Tribulation and national restoration of Israel. I appreciate the author’s love for the Scriptures and their desire to take Christ’s words seriously. However, as someone who holds to an Optimistic Amillennial view with some postmillennial leanings, I’d like to offer a gracious alternative perspective—one that I believe still honors God’s Word and uplifts His purposes through redemptive history.

1. Matthew 24:9 Refers to the First-Century Church, Not a Future Tribulation

In Matthew 24:9 (ESV), Jesus says:

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.”

I believe Jesus is speaking directly to His disciples about events that would occur within their generation. The earlier context in Matthew 24:2 is key:

“Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

This clearly refers to the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in AD 70, a catastrophic event that indeed involved betrayal, persecution, and martyrdom of many early Christians (see Acts 8:1–3; 12:1–2). Jesus later affirms in Matthew 24:34:

“Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.”

This time marker, in my view, places Matthew 24:9 within the first-century context, not a far-distant end-times scenario<a Jesus refers to this in Matthew 24:21:

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.”

This correlates with Daniel 12:1, which also speaks of an unprecedented time of distress. Both passages point to the covenantal judgment on Jerusalem for rejecting the Messiah, as Jesus weeps over in Matthew 23:37–38.

The Jewish historian Josephus describes the destruction of Jerusalem in horrific detail. Over a million Jews perished, and the temple—the heart of Old Covenant worship—was destroyed. The Beast is Nero, and Revelation Was Written Before AD 70

You noted the dual imagery in prophecy, such as Antiochus and the Man of Sin, or Babylon and Satan. I agree that prophetic language often has layered application. However, from an early dating of Revelation (before AD 70), I understand the beast of Revelation to refer to Nero Caesar, the brutal Roman emperor who persecuted Christians intensely and whose name, in Hebrew gematria, matches the number 666 (Rev. 13:18)4.

This interpretation also allows the book of Revelation to be a prophetic warning to first-century believers about the coming tribulation and judgment upon Jerusalem—rather than a roadmap of future political events.

4. The True Israel Has Always Been a People of Faith

Romans 9:6 reminds us:

“For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel.”

God’s redemptive plan was never exclusively tied to ethnic or national Israel. Instead, He has always been forming one people of God—Jew and Gentile alike—united in Christ (Ephesians 2:11–22).

The hope for Israel is not found in a future earthly kingdom but in Jesus, the true King and fulfillment of all God’s promises (2 Corinthians 1:20). As Paul writes in Galatians 3:29:

“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

Thus, the “nation” that emerges from the tribulation is the Church, made up of every tribe, tongue, and nation (Revelation 7:9–14)—not a reconstituted theocracy5.
<div author’s reverence for Scripture and earnest expectation of Christ’s return. Though we differ in our eschatological timing and interpretation, we are united in our belief that Jesus will return, judge the living and the dead, and reign forever.

As Paul reminds us in Titus 2:13:

“Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ…”

Let us encourage one another with these truths (1 Thessalonians 4:18), and continue searching the Scriptures together, not to divide, but to grow in love and truth.

The Counselor’s Call: Koinonia 59’s Conclusion and Final Charge

In a world where online debate and doctrinal division can so easily fracture relationships, we must remember this: not all differences in theology demand division. While eschatology is a precious area of study, it is not the foundation of our salvation or the grounds for Christian fellowship. As long as a viewpoint does not compromise the gospel, the deity of Christ, the sufficiency of Scripture, or the nature of salvation by grace through faith, we must approach one another not with a clenched fist—but with open hands, hearts, and Bibles.

Paul reminds us to be people who speak the truth, but do so in love:

“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”
(Ephesians 4:15, ESV)

And again:

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
(Colossians 4:6, ESV)

We can hold strong convictions—indeed, we must—but our strength must be wrapped in grace. The true hope of eschatology is not in how Christ comes again, but in the certain and glorious truth that Christ is coming again.

“So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”
(Hebrews 9:28, ESV)

Let that be the hope that fuels our unity.

Fellowship—koinonia—should not be broken because of differing end-times timelines. As Paul exhorted the church in Rome:

“As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.”
(Romans 14:1, ESV)

Closed-Handed vs. Open-Handed Doctrines

In theology, it’s helpful to distinguish between closed-handed (essential) truths and open-handed (secondary or tertiary) truths:

🔒 Closed-Handed (Tier One) Truths: These are non-negotiables for true Christian faith:

The deity of Christ (John 1:1; Colossians 2:9)

Salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9)

The inspiration and authority of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

The bodily resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:3–4)

The second coming of Christ (Acts 1:11; Hebrews 9:28)

🤝 Open-Handed (Tier Two and Three) Truths: These are important but not grounds for dividing fellowship:

The timing and nature of the millennium (Amillennial, Premillennial, Postmillennial)

Baptism mode and timing (credo vs. paedo baptism)

Worship styles or church governance structures

Specific interpretations of symbolic prophecy

Even if we differ in our understanding of the “when” and “how” of Christ’s return, we can lock arms in the joy of knowing He will return in glory.

5 Application Points

Respond with Grace and Clarity
When engaging with theological views that differ from yours, speak clearly—but gently.
